Xanthus' Symadex Demonstrates Ability To Increase Spinal Cord ...

Xanthus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. presented preclinical data further supporting the potential for Symadex™ to reverse the clinical and pathological signs of multiple sclerosis (MS), including new data demonstrating increased spinal cord remyelination. The study was presented by Dr. Stephen J. Karlik, Ph.D., Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario and researchers from Xanthus at a meeting of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada in Banff, Canada.

Using an animal model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelistis (EAE) designed to replicate MS, Dr. Karlik studied the efficacy of Symadex in both acute and chronic phases of the disease. While treatment with Symadex in this study attenuated acute EAE, it prevented chronic disease.

Towards a comprehensive package of preventive and palliative care

“Rushing to the people with ARVs just because ART is available is not a good idea. Having the holistic and palliative care model in place helps for compliance and helps people to have success in treatment," said Collette Cunningham, the Senior Technical Manager for Palliative Care with Catholic Relief Services in Zambia, speaking at this year's HIV Implementer's meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.

A number of studies presented at the meeting underscored the value of supporting the delivery of antiretroviral therapy (ART) within a package of preventive and palliative care services.

For instance, the findings of one very large study (with close to 1100 subjects), which was actually designed to evaluate different methods of monitoring responses among people receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) within the context of the pioneering Home-Based AIDS Care (HBAC) project in Uganda, seemed to demonstrate, more than anything else, the benefits of the model of care and the basic package of services offered by the programme.

Extracellular protein sensitizes ovarian cancer cells to chemotherapy

Scientists have uncovered critical new details about the mechanisms that modulate the response of ovarian cancer cells to chemotherapy. The research, published by Cell Press in the December issue of Cancer Cell, helps to explain why many patients develop resistance to the taxane class of drugs and may lead to improved treatment of ovarian cancer.

Sangamo BioSciences Announces Presentation Of Data For ZFP Therapeutic ...

Sangamo BioSciences, Inc. (Nasdaq: SGMO) announced the presentation of positive data in a mouse tumor model from its program to develop a novel cell therapy using its zinc finger DNA-binding protein nuclease (ZFN(TM)) technology for treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a progressive and usually fatal brain cancer. The data were presented at the 49th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) by Sangamo's collaborator Michael C.V. Jensen, M.D., Associate Chair, Division of Cancer Immunotherapeutics & Tumor Immunology, City of Hope.

"Working with Sangamo, we have succeeded in generating ZFN-modified engineered T-cells that can destroy glioblastoma cells in vivo in the presence of dexamethasone," said Dr. Jensen. "This is an important result in the progress of our efforts to create a cell-based product which can be used in combination with glucocorticoids such as dexamethasone to treat patients with GBM.

Turnaround in Iraq: Bush Deserves ‘Praise’

And it need not be a case of liberal democracy (a perspective that nobody sensible ever advocated). Now it can demonstrate that the alternative in the region doesn't necessarily have to be a brutal dictatorship or a regime supported by radical groups and that finances terrorist attacks. And I doubt that success in Iraq will translate into considerable political pressure on Saudi Arabia, which would culminate in changes of North American strategy in the region.

But the improvements in Iraq constitute a challenge for European countries. Contrary to Iraq, in Afghanistan the situation is getting worse. In 2004, the North Americans and Europeans made a strategic agreement. The first would focus on Iraq and the European allies would increase their efforts in Afghanistan. That is what happened.
