The Austin Diagnostic Clinic

One out of ten women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is the key. The earlier the cancer is found, the greater chance for recovery. The Austin Diagnostic Clinic encourages you to perform monthly breast self-exams and schedule a mammogram yearly starting at the age of 40. The Austin Diagnostic Clinics Womens Imaging Center offers the most advanced techniques for breast cancer screening.

What is Mammography? Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

Mammogram Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers because it can show changes in the breast up to two years before a patient or physician can feel them.

Time for a "Reality Check"

I love reality television, I said with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

There's a great new show out there called "Reality Check," and it's destined to be a hit. I was thumbing through the promotional material for the show and just couldn't get over it:

Today on "Reality Check," the latest and hottest show on the network, we stop in to find that a man named "Scooter" has been sentenced to just 30 months in the slammer for lying to federal prosecutors.

Many of Scooter's friends plan to protest, very upset that he won't be able to wear his Armani Tux for more than two years, while just a few blocks away from the courthouse where he was sentenced, small children were seen dumpster diving with their mother for a night's meal.

Later on "Reality Check," we'll watch the exchange among 10 dapper gentlemen with a collective IQ of 10 as they debate the tough issues of the day.

Gender Bias in the ER?

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found women are two to three times less likely to get defibrillators than men are. The tiny, implantable devices, which keep an ailing heart beating, can mean the difference between life and death when trying restore a heart's natural rhythm.

Amazingly, even in the midst of a heart attack, women are 16 percent less likely than men to be seen by a cardiologist, and are treated, instead, by an internist or family physician.

The Duke University of Medicine study also found women are 15 to 30 percent less likely than men to get an angiogram to detect blocked arteries, and without one, doctors would never know what treatment the patient needs.

When blockages are discovered, women are 12 percent less likely to receive clot-busting drugs.

Moffitt Cancer Center Takes Part In Newly Published Study In This Week ...

The Moffitt Cancer Center said findings from the MM-009 Phase III trial show a statistically significant overall survival benefit for patients with multiple myeloma treated with REVLIMID plus dexamethasone. This study, along with another large, international trial evaluating REVLIMID, was published in this week's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. In addition to increased survival, patients who received the oral cancer therapy in combination with the steroid dexamethasone also had increased response rates, time-to-disease progression and duration of response compared to patients treated with the steroid alone.

In the study, patients who received REVLIMID plus dexamethasone had an improved median overall survival time of 29.6 months compared to 20.2 months. The median time to progression was 11.1 months compared with 4.7 months in the placebo-dexamethasone group.
