Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Patients To Benefit From Promising New Drug ...

Patients diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) will benefit from immediate access to a promising new drug therapy thanks to a funding commitment from the Ministry of Health, Provincial Health Services Authority and the BC Cancer Agency.

"Cancer is a horrible disease for patients and those who care for them as it touches entire families," said Health Minister George Abbott. "British Columbia is taking advantage of every opportunity in our fight for a cancer-free society. Patients with chronic myeloid leukemia will benefit from access to the latest drug therapy."

Sprycel (dasatinib), recently approved by Health Canada, is for the treatment of patients with CML who are no longer responding to Gleevec (imatinib) therapy.

Nicotine output increased every year in every cigarette category over seven years, according to a Harvard analysis of Massachusetts government data. During this period as a whole, nicotine yield from every major tobacco company increased. Tobacco companies' spin: It's random variation, since some individual brands didn't increase. Researchers' rebuttal: When yields from every category and every producer go up, that's not random. Outraged reaction: The nicotine infusion violates the industry's legal agreement to discourage youth smoking. Casual reaction: Who cares, since cigarette sales steadily declined during this period. Bipolar disorder: More than a punchline

That's not truth in labeling, the comedian said, turning the package around. On that side the brand name was "Bipolar."

At least people who have bipolar disorder weren't laughing.

A powerful stigma is attached to being bipolar. "The stigma is that everybody who's bipolar could go wild," said Sue Floyd, a board member of the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance in Cape Gir?ardeau.

Many people don't understand the disorder and its varying severity. Their first impulse is to stay away from someone who's bipolar. People who have the disorder fear that reaction. That's one of the problems with Leno's joke.

"If people are laughed at, it's just going to drive them back in their shell," said Dr. Kishore Khot, a psychiatrist at the Community Counseling Center in Cape Girardeau.

But Steinberg said he was encouraged by a phone conversation Wednesday with Matt Thomas, Dolphins general counsel-football administration."His indication was they were interested in Ricky," Steinberg said.

Canada slips in gender equality

A woman still has to work much harder and smarter than a man in any corporate setting if she wants to get ahead. Even then, she'll most likely be excluded from the top ranks, just because she's a woman.

Music orchestra? Same thing. Until certain orchestras started doing blind auditions, they were 90% men, and woman only had minor roles. When they started doing blind auditions, women were suddenly winning first-trumpet and first-violin positions in the orchestra. That is 100% proof that there was discrimination.

Unfortunately, at the corporate level they still don't do blind interviews and auditions for senior positions. Until then, woman will continue to be excluded.

So to answer your question: men aren't counted because men still form the dominant group.

Smith column: Young people steering clear of steroids

They have spent much of 2007 watching the sports world's doping dragnet catch cheaters, big and small.

They've witnessed American sports' kings and queens squirming beneath suspicions of anabolic steroids use and facing federal perjury charges for covering up their syringe-stuck success.

They've seen stars getting booed and humiliated and stripped of Olympic medals, a Tour de France leader's yellow jersey, a home-run record's untainted glory and their reputations as "clean" sportsmen.

When about 50 former and active players are expected to be revealed today in George J. Mitchell's report on performance-enhancing drug use in major-league baseball, America's youth will get more characters to add their already well cast cautionary tale about drug-cheating in sports.
