| Cancer cell line developed that is resistant to new cancer therapy
"The ultimate goal is to be able to understand how cancer cells develop resistance and to have forward-thinking strategies about how to combat that resistance," says Dr. Warren Fiskus, postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Kapil Bhalla, director of the Medical College of Georgia Cancer Center. Resistant cells emerged by treating human leukemic cells with regular, increasing doses of histone deacetylase, or HDAC, inhibitors, similar to what patients would receive. "At each dose level, there were some cells that did die," says Dr. Fiskus. "Ultimately, we isolated a population of cells that were resistant to very high concentrations of these agents and other agents in the same class." Dr. Fiskus is presenting the findings Dec. 11 during the American Society of Hematology's 49th Annual Meeting and Exposition in Atlanta.
Breakthrough Vaccine May Prove Successful for Treating Brain Cancer
Researchers at New York University's Clinical Cancer Center and several other U.S. medical colleges believe they may have found a breakthrough vaccine to treat the most deadly form of brain cancer. The vaccine actually uses proteins found in brain tumors of patients with glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and fatal form of brain cancer, to destroy the tumors themselves. Several universities including NYU, Duke University and the University of California, Los Angeles, as well as Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit are testing it. The five-year study will track the effects of the vaccine on patients, who receive radiation and chemotherapy treatments over a three-year period. The participants will receive the vaccines every couple of weeks at first, then once every few months and several times per year for three years and will be screened for two additional years following the treatment.

Court upholds decision in Jordan's favor in legal battle with ex-lover
An Illinois Appellate Court ruled in favor of Michael Jordan on Wednesday in a five-year legal dispute with a woman who alleged the basketball great promised her $5 million to keep quiet over the paternity of a child. The ruling affirmed a Cook County Circuit Court judge's July 2006 decision that any possible agreement between Jordan and Karla Knafel was ''unenforceable'' and ''voidable'' either due to ''Knafel's fraudulent misrepresentation to Jordan that he was the child's father'' or as a ''mutual mistake of fact.'' .

Many veterinarians respond to calls when their clinics are closed, to give advice on the phone, or rush to their clinics to tend to pets in distress.Dr. Larry Baker said it is not unusual for him to receive several calls during one night, mostly from regular clients of Northgate Pet Clinic."One morning I went in at 2 (a.m.), 4 and 6," he said. "That was unusual."At 4 a.m. on a recent weekday, a client called to say her dog was having puppies. Baker had X-rayed the dog the previous day, and predicted the births would probably take place a few days later.When the dog owner described what was taking place in the middle of the night, Baker reassured her that medical help was not necessary.Sometimes, veterinarians have to jump out of bed on short sleep to help bring new pets into the world."A C-section is something we do at night," said Baker, who rotates on emergency duty with four other Northgate veterinarians.
