Antarctic Challenge For Cancerbackup, UK

Peter Clutterbuck is setting out this week on an Antarctic expedition aiming to climb some of the unclimbed peaks in the Ellsworth mountains to raise money for the cancer information charity Cancerbackup. He will be accompanied by Simon Garrod a former British Antarctic Survey commander and now a professional mountain guide.

Peter is raising money for Cancerbackup because of the support he has received from the charity when a number of close family members have been diagnosed with cancer. This includes his mother who sadly died from the disease and his wife, Bonnie who is currently receiving treatment for breast cancer.

Peter is an experienced mountaineer and sailor with previous expeditions including climbing in the Alps, Andes, Himalayas and Arctic Greenland and sailing across both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

Turnaround in Iraq: Bush Deserves ‘Praise’

And it need not be a case of liberal democracy (a perspective that nobody sensible ever advocated). Now it can demonstrate that the alternative in the region doesn't necessarily have to be a brutal dictatorship or a regime supported by radical groups and that finances terrorist attacks. And I doubt that success in Iraq will translate into considerable political pressure on Saudi Arabia, which would culminate in changes of North American strategy in the region.

But the improvements in Iraq constitute a challenge for European countries. Contrary to Iraq, in Afghanistan the situation is getting worse. In 2004, the North Americans and Europeans made a strategic agreement. The first would focus on Iraq and the European allies would increase their efforts in Afghanistan. That is what happened.

USC climber embraces mission to fight cancer

At a time in their lives when many people are ready to slow down, Upper St. Clair's Laura Willumsen is ready to climb mountains--literally.

Willumsen, marketing director for the Pittsburgh Opera, is one of four Pittsburghers participating in Climb for Hope. Climb for Hope's Pittsburgh team was created with the purpose of beating breast cancer by funding innovative vaccine research for late-stage breast cancer. Team Pittsburgh leaves in January to tackle Ecuador's second highest peak, Cotopaxi, which at 19,348 feet is also the world's highest active volcano.

Five marketing professionals: Willumsen, Karen Kern, Nick Cobler, Todd Lepley, and Ted Williams; make up Team Pittsburgh, the first regional team for Climb for Hope. Each team member has a personal reason for their participation.

Oral Contraception. Studies have been conflicting about whether estrogen in oral contraception increases the chances for breast cancer. A 2002 study supported an earlier major study, with both finding no evidence that OC use increases the risk for breast cancer, even in women who have taken them for 15 years of more or had taken them at young ages. In contrast, other studies have reported a higher risk in women who are current or recent users and in women who take them for more than four years before a first full-term pregnancy. Still, the risk for women taking OCs around menopause is unclear. Earlier research found a higher risk in women who used earlier forms of the pill containing high-dose estrogens and progestins (before 1975) and who had a family history of breast cancer.

LOCAL COLUMN: Ready to face tomorrow?

He practiced medicine here in Meadville for more than half a century.

My Uncle Ed was a dentist. He walked to school and completed the eighth grade, then worked as a streetcar conductor before fighting in the Spanish American War. Afterward, he attended University of Pittsburgh Dental School, graduating in 1904.

When my mother first became a legal secretary (she walked to school, too) she worked for an attorney who shared office space with a lawyer named Captain Jimmy Smith. Captain Smith was a Civil War veteran who never went to college or law school. As a kid, he probably walked to school. But as a young man, he "read law" in the offices of another lawyer and ultimately gained enough experience to hang out his shingle without the benefit of a long, expensive education.

Those were simpler times.

Recall guide helping shoppers stay safe

While Stratman said she wasn't aware of a recall guide the Illinois Attorney General's Office made available last month, she checks the Web site often and recommends other shoppers do the same.Looking at a list that spanned several pages of a notebook, Stratman said she was shopping as part of an Angel Tree program that provides gifts to children of incarcerated parents. She had to put a few things back because of the recalls, she said, including the popular Dora the Explorer toy that along with other Fisher-Price toys was recalled in August because of high amounts of lead.Natalie Bauer, a spokeswoman for the AG's office, said the 91-page Safe Shopping Guide is filled with hundreds of recalls, including toys, jewelry and other items. The guide, which lists items by name, photo and reason for recall, can be downloaded from the AG's Web site at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov or picked up from local offices like Carbondale's at 1001 E.
