Wildlife Returning To Chernobyl

The wilderness is encroaching over abandoned towns in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. One of the elderly residents who refused to evacuate the contaminated area says packs of wolves have eaten two of her dogs, and wild boar trample through her cornfield. Scientist are divided as to whether or not the animals are flourishing in the highly radioactive environment: "Robert J. Baker of Texas Tech University says the mice and other rodents he has studied at Chernobyl since the early 1990s have shown remarkable tolerance for elevated radiation levels. But Timothy Mousseau of the University of South Carolina, a biologist who studies barn swallows at Chernobyl, says that while wild animals have settled in the area, they have struggled to build new populations." .

Imo Distributes Health Equipment to Communities

The manager of the State's Health System Development Project (11), Dr Johnny Iheberem, announced this in Owerri weekend at a ceremony organised to distribute the equipment to the communities.

He said that the equipment would take care of some emergency obstetric cases that were common in the rural communities of the state.

Cancer on my mind

As an oncologist, I am interested in the lure of alternative medicine. And so I have tried to understand why, in spite of all the scientific evidence at hand, there are many amongst us who do not want to undergo conventional cancer treatment surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy but instead risk being treated by unproven and potentially dangerous alternative therapies.

I am sure the lack of science education plays a role. Science is more than the description of plants and animals. It is more than technology and engineering. To understand science is to understand the principles, methodologies and philosophy of science.
